There are different type of cement:
- Ordinary Portland cement.
- Quick setting cement.
- Rapid hardening cement.
- Sulphate resisting cement.
- Low heat cement.
- Air entering cement.
- White cement.
- Coloured cement.
- Hydrophobic cement.
- Expansive cement.
Ordinary Portland cement:
This type cement is very common type of cement. It is used in all type of construction where there is no sulphur attack in ground water. The main chemical component of the ordinary Portland cement are calcium silica alumina and iron. There are various type of grades in opc such as grade 33, 43, 53 etc. The 33N/mm2 is developed 28th day then it is called grade 33 cement if the 43N/mm2 is developed in 20th day then it is called grade 43 cement. It is little costly than the low grade cement. The opc produce develop its high strength in shot period. It develop strength in 7 days.
Quick setting cement:
As the name indicates that the cement sets quickly. When the quick setting cement is added or mixed to water it starts to set in five minutes and become hard stone like structure in 30 minutes. This is due to addition of aluminium sulphate and gypsum in large amount and it grained finely with the cement. This type of cement are generally used for under water construction and cool climate condition. When the water is added to the cement it starts its reaction so that the constructions should be made fast. This type of cement are not widely available.
Rapid hardening cement:
The name itself indicates that the cement produces the strength rapidly. It develop its strength quickly when compared to ordinary Portland cement. It develops its strength in 3 day itself. This quick setting is due to high fine grinding of the cement. It is heated in very high temperature and large amount of limestone is added to this. This cement is used where the high strength is required instantly in initial stages. It attains 22N/mm2 in three days itself. This type of the cement is used for the road repair work and early removal of formworks etc.
Sulphate resisting cement:
The ordinary Portland cement has less resistance form sulphur attack. This type of cement is used where there is more sulphate content. Due to presence large amount of silicate content and low amount of tri calcium aluminate it fight against the sulphate effectively. This type of cement is used in most commonly in marine structure, sewage system and in foundation work where there is sulphate content.
Low heat cement:
This cement harden slowly and produces very low heat when reacting with water. The low heat cement requires low amount of water when compared to the other type of the cement. It takes more time to set and gives high final strength. It is excellent in impact erosion and water resistant. This type of the cement is used mass construction work like construction of dams.
Air entraining cement:
This type of cement is produced by mixing small amount air entraining agent to the ordinary Portland cement. This type of the cement are mostly used in the concert. The air bubbles are created while mixing the plastic it easily flows and not harden. The primary aim of the cement is increase the durability of the harden concrete and especially in the freezing climate and the other purpose is to increase the workability of the concrete.
As the name indicates the colour of the cement will be white and it has all same quality like the ordinary Portland cement. The white cement is used for just combining the inorganic pigments to produce the brightly coloured concretes. This type of the cement are used for the architectural purpose, manufacturing of the coloured concrete and flooring tiles etc.
The coloured cement are ordinary Portland cement which consist of 5 to 10 percentage of pigment. If the percentage exceeds more than 10 percentage if affects the strength of the cement. The combinations of chromium oxide gives the green colour and cobalt gives the blue colour and the combinations of ton oxide gives the brown, red, yellow and the manganese oxide gives the black, brown colours. The cement are used only for the finishing of floor, external surface, artificial marble and aesthetic purpose.
As the name itself indicates that the cement can be used where the water is more predominant. This type of cement forms some admixture. The admixture forms a thin layer over the cement grains. In the initial stage the setting of hydrophobic cement is slow due to the admixture present in the cement. At the final stage (28th day) strength will be as same as the ordinary Portland cement. This type of cement is used for construction of dams and spillways. This type of cement is used in cold weather conditions.
This type of expansive cement while mixed with the water increase its volume after the setting time. This type of cement are more costly so that the cement are used only where it is more importantly required.
